Personal Advice from Undergraduates:

Personal Statement

The Personal Statement is your opportunity to differentiate yourself from candidates who will most likely share similar competitive grades to yourself. Despite only being 4000 characters, each one is precious. You can find the generic information on UCAS and online, however we hope to give you the less common advice from students who have already been highly successful in this process.

There isn’t a one size fits all approach to writing your personal statement; the real aim is to write something personal yet academic and convincing- targeted at mainly your top 2 university choices (assuming they will be the most competitive). To stand out, showcase not just what you’ve done, but how those experiences have shaped your worldview and ambitions. Highlight moments of growth, connect them to your academic aspirations, and emphasise your genuine passion for your chosen field. Whether it’s a trip abroad or an internship, draw on the lessons learned and reflect on how they’ve prepared you for the challenges ahead. Don’t rush the process- give yourself time to explore, reflect, and refine your story.
